A Space for Musing and Reflection

Nocturnal Thoughts I: On Being Self Reliant

How many times at two in the night lying on your bed in a dark room have you felt lonely? The rain lashing outside and frequent claps of thunder keeping you wide awake. All attempts to cover the blanket over the head fail. You want to talk to someone and let your heart out to that person. Or just call someone and talk about the weather and delve into a deep conversation. I am sure, some fortunate people will say “Never!”  I am not even talking to you people. You are a fortunate lot. You have found someone in your life who would give up their sleep in order to make you sleep. You simply call that person and soon you are walking in the mythic lands of El Dorado bathed in the golden light and locked in a sick romantic interlude.  No, kind sir, step aside. Make way for those who still stare at empty walls at night and ponder on their lives. And it can be those unfortunate souls too who were hearkened by Haste into something that looked promising but is just a regret now. Join in, join in! We singles hardly have anyone who will be up at 3 in the night and will be listening to our woeful tales; and if anyone does wake up, that person will be cursing us for the next four weeks to every man he meets on his way to work! So, we talk on being self-reliant.

It is fairly common of every one of us to go out for dinner with our friends. We laugh and frolic around with the waitress and we do have a jolly good time. But back in your bed, you remember that couple on the adjacent table who had ordered fried shrimps. They ate less, but they talked a lot. Something about them was entrancing. A chemistry, that will eat up your senses till you sleep. It seems they were in another world; a world where roses never died, sunshine was bright and the nights were delicate. A magical world altogether! The moment seemed perfect. Admit it, at some point in one’s life, a man does yearn for that moment. Sit across the woman who in your world is the most beautiful person on Earth. The chemistry reverberates in your head and you browse through all the girls in your contact list: “best friend”, “said no”, “best friend’s girlfriend”, “no chance”, “ex” and ”ex”. Taking a deep sigh you just fall back into your pillow and stare at the pouring rain.

We keep relying on others to make sure that we are happy. Well, they sure do. That’s why we make friends in the first place. But always? One should never expect that. They are friends. Not our partners. And we should know the difference. Failure to distinguish such differences can cost us a lot. We should be self-reliant.

Who is the best company you have? You yourself are the best company! I am not talking to anyone and complaining that the one I want to talk to is busy. Neither do I blame that friend. Work has to be done and it should be done. It does not mean I should sulk and be irritated. No, I am writing. Rather I am talking to more people now! To be honest, you are an imaginary person in my head sitting across me in a crowded roadside café. People pass by us giving us a slight glance as we talk over coffee and a couple of ham sandwiches. So, back to our topic. We all dream of our own Rapunzel. But some of us get stuck in marshy wastelands in pursuit of such a dream, while some just fall victim to Haste who makes it a point to put you in a giant roller coaster ride even before you can think of what you had just done. Such is life, my friend. Less of success, more of failure. Of course, the lucky ones, make way!

In our battles in our lives, it is the fire within us which drives us forward. One should learn how to sit beside that fire and talk to it. Yes, it can talk! It can help you make a lot of sensible decisions. And it is never too late to listen to that fire and obey it even if it means taking steps that could disrupt your present life. It is because that fire that override your emotions and give you advice that one needs the most. Seek that fire in you and listen to it. Trust me, friend, I have. It is truly wonderful. Also, one should exercise their hobbies. A person most fortunate is the one who is an artist. It is because art never lies. It is the truest part of you. It is your identity. Basically, just do what pleases you and kindles that fire within you. No one will do that for you.

Anyway, friend, nice talking to you. I hope the coffee was good. I shall leave too although I do return here often to talk and have coffee. Adieu.

I really really really enjoyed this! This is absolutely brilliant. I completely understand the feeling of having a good day with friends but then not being able to sleep at night, feeling lonely and just wishing for sleep. You don’t want to disturb anyone with your problems, especially when they are not what you would call ‘important issues’ (e.g. cancer, death).Even worse, when nothing is specifically wrong and you’re just lonely and need a cuddle; when you’re just thinking about you’re life. I hope I can find the feeling that my company is the best company. Brilliant post! 🙂
